Made it to Cape Town

Arrived safe and sound in South Africa today!

The day started with a delayed flight from JFK.  We ended up leaving an hour later than we were supposed to.  My connecting flight in Johannesburg left after a 3 hour layover so I was still pretty sure I'd have enough time to make it.

Flew for 15 hours to Johannesburg, arriving at 9:30am local time (3:30am NY time)- excited but very sleepy.  Getting through JNB was a bit of on ordeal.  That 3 hour plus layover turned into arriving at the gate 15 minutes before the flight to Cape Town departed.  (Thanks to seatguru.com, I scoped the flight out before and picked the one seat in the plane with no one in front of me- tons of legroom!  Was nice after being a bit cramped for 15 hours...)

Luckily, had some travel buddies at JFK and a few more for the swap to Cape Town.  Split a cab with a classmate and made it to our hotel right around 3:30pm- steps away from the Victoria and Alfred waterfront.  Totally forgot that they drive on the other side of the road here and that the steering wheels are on the other side of the car.  Over under on how many near death experiences I have crossing the street?  (Memories of London abound.)

Our cab ride to our hotel

View from our hotel, the Breakwater Lodge

We got settled at the hotel (Breakwater Lodge- an old prison!) then went out as a group to explore.  Lots of little shops, tons of restaurants, a craft market, and a massive mall.

Had a quick cheap dinner then just came back to the hotel now (7:30 or so) to relax, regroup, and prep for our first meeting tomorrow in the morning!
